The inlet, wastewater and sludge from two wastewater treatment plants in Styria were analysed by Viktoria for 33 target PFAS and for total extractable organofluorines (EOF). Surprisingly, target PFAS are produced in wastewater treatment plants. This could be explained by the fact that undetectable PFAS could be degraded to the target PFAS. But the bulk of EOF is still unknown. Wastewater treatment plants (and not only in Styria) do not have the possibility to remove PFAS from the water. Something that needs to change.
